The Himalayan Serow, a medium-sized goat-antelope, is found in the rugged and mountainous regions of the Himalayas, including parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. It typically inhabits steep, forested slopes, ranging from 1,500 to 4,000 meters above sea level, often near the tree line and in areas with dense vegetation.
The Himalayan Serow has a stocky build with a thick, coarse coat that is usually dark brown or greyish with lighter undersides. Its legs are short but powerful, and it has a distinctive, bushy tail. Both males and females have short, backward-curving horns, which are more prominent in males. Adult males weigh between 30–50 kg, while females are typically smaller, weighing around 20–30 kg. They are about 90–100 cm tall at the shoulder.
Himalayan Serows are herbivores. They are solitary animals or found in small family groups and are primarily active during the day, although they are also crepuscular. They are excellent climbers and are highly agile, capable of navigating very steep and rocky terrain to escape predators.
