The Hog Deer is a small to medium-sized deer species native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It gets its name from its distinctive running style, in which it keeps its head low and darts through tall grass—much like a wild pig.
This deer has a sturdy build with short legs, a deep chest, and coarse brown fur that may have faint white spots. Males have short, three-tined antlers. Adults typically stand about 60–70 cm at the shoulder.
Hog Deer prefer grasslands, riverine forests, and marshy areas, often near water. They are solitary or found in small groups and feed on grasses, leaves, and aquatic plants. Once widespread, their populations have declined due to habitat loss and hunting.
