The Indian Gray Mongoose is a small carnivorous mammal found throughout India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and parts of Bangladesh and Pakistan. It inhabits a variety of environments, including forests, grasslands, agricultural fields, and even urban areas, often in proximity to human settlements. It has a slender body, with grayish-brown fur, a long, bushy tail, and a pointed snout. Its eyes are dark, and it has a distinctive mane of hair on the back of its neck, which stands up when it feels threatened. The Indian Gray Mongoose typically grows to around 50–60 cm in length, including its tail, and has a weight range of 1–2 kg.
The Indian Gray Mongoose is primarily carnivorous, feeding on a wide range of prey, including rodents, birds, insects, and reptiles. It is especially known for its ability to hunt and kill snakes, due to its quick reflexes and partial resistance to snake venom. This mongoose is solitary and territorial, with an active, alert nature. It is mostly diurnal but may also be active at dawn and dusk.
