The Altai Weasel, also known as Mountain Weasel or Pale Weasel is a small carnivorous mammal found in the high-altitude regions of Central Asia, including the Himalayas, Tibet, and the Altai Mountains, spanning countries such as China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and parts of Russia. It typically inhabits alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and forested areas at elevations between 2,000 and 4,000 meters. The Altai Weasel has a slender, elongated body, with a short tail and a dense, thick fur coat that helps it survive in cold, harsh mountain environments. Its fur is typically light brown or reddish-brown, with a lighter underside. The species has a pointed snout, sharp claws, and small, sharp teeth. It generally weighs around 200–300 grams and has a body length of 20–30 cm, with a tail length of 10–15 cm. It is an opportunistic carnivore, preying on small mammals, birds, eggs, and insects. Like other weasels, it is an active and fast-moving animal, often foraging alone.
