The Woolly Flying Squirrel is one of the largest and most elusive flying squirrels in the world, found in the high-altitude regions of northern Pakistan and parts of Jammu and Kashmir. It inhabits rugged cliffs and coniferous forests at altitudes ranging from 2,400 to 4,000 meters, often near tree lines. This rare species was once thought to be extinct until its rediscovery in the late 20th century.
The Woolly Flying Squirrel is distinguished by its thick, woolly fur, which is grayish-brown and provides excellent insulation against the cold of its mountainous habitat. It has a broad, bushy tail and a well-developed gliding membrane (patagium) that enables it to glide between trees and cliffs over considerable distances. Primarily nocturnal, this squirrel feeds on pine needles, cones, bark, and other vegetation.
